How to Live a Lit Life Part 1
How to Live a Lit Life Part 1
Many times in the Bible, fire is synonymous with the presence of God and His glory. God wants our lives to be so illuminated with His love and power that people can see the light in our lives from a distance. He wants it to be contagious. And I believe if you’re reading this, there’s a light in your life that God desperately wants to turn on so that you can shine bright for His glory and advance His Kingdom.
So where do we start? Let’s start with a flame because you can’t set anything on fire without one. In the case of spiritual fire, the flame comes from the inside. It’s an inside work.
It’s like candles. A candle doesn’t go through some enormous effort to be a candle. It’s just being itself and when you light it, it’s fulfilling its purpose by having a flame or by illuminating a dark room. The same is true for us. When you’re lit, you are serving your purpose. When you are doing what you are called to do, God gets the glory.
The issue for some of us is our flame is out or it’s too low. We may not even know it’s low so we’re walking around thinking we’re shinin’, shinin’, shinin’ (*Beyonce voice*) when really, we’re in the dark. Yikes!
Never Settle for Less
A friend of mine recently told me a story that I think would encourage you. He said he was walking down the hallway in his house when he noticed how dark it was. He looked at the light bulbs and realized that some of them were dim while others were actually going out. So he went to the store, got some new bulbs, came back, and switched out the old ones expecting to have light. But when he walked down his hallway the second time, he noticed it was still dim.
He looked back at the package and realized that he bought 40-watt bulbs, instead of 60, which is the normal bulbs anyone should buy (I know, I know. You didn’t ask for a house maintenance lesson today LOL). Anyway, so now he is like, I have got to fix this. He takes the bulbs back to the drug store and starts searching for the correct bulbs.
In the process, he’s talking to people who work at the store and they ask him why he doesn’t buy fluorescent 75-watt bulbs instead. Now I’m no light expert, but I knew based on his story that fluorescent light saves you money on your bill over time. So in the end, my friend skipped the 60-watt bulbs and decided to go with the fluorescent 75-watts bulbs. He goes home, installs them, and ta-da! He now has light AND he’s saving money.
And as I was thinking about this story, I realized that being lit is one thing, but staying lit is another. The truth is many people are so comfortable with living at a lower wattage of light that they are missing all the benefits that come from a life that is submitted to Christ – confidence, purpose, power, freedom, prosperity, and all the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22).
Check Your Wattage
It’s not always the devil ruining our lives! We love to talk about God, but sometimes we need to talk about us, amen?! We are in partnership with God to fulfill our destiny. Destiny is not falling out of the sky into our living rooms LOL. If it were, everyone would be living their best lives.
God has a plan for your life. It was predestined before the foundation of the earth. We have to stop waiting for God to do things that He has already done. We have to step into destiny, and a lot of that has to do with adjusting the wattage in our light bulbs (those areas of our lives that are are not fully submitted to God). This means we have to seek God (plug in) so that we can access the power that has already been made available to us.
Here is the thing. God only gets the glory when you shine. Mathew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before men so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
People need something to look at!
1 Corinthians 2:14 says, “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”
People who are not in Christ don’t always understand what you’re talking about when you reference spiritual things, but they definitely understand the natural (what we wear, what we drive, what we do, etc.) Even if they’re not super-spiritual, they know whether your light is on!
Everything that God gives us is about drawing people to Him. The Bible says that the Lord is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God (Romans 8:19). Who are these “sons”? The people who know who they are but also know their God. They are the people who are mature in Christ, who stay lit, and are willing to be lit for Christ instead of themselves.
Shine From Within
It’s the light from your life that is going to bring others out of darkness. I know you want God to pick somebody else, but He chose you! Their struggle ends with your surrender. It’s your obedience to God that will cause breakthrough.
God starts at home meaning, first He is going to transform your life, then He’s going to use you as a catalyst to bless and transform those around you (family, friends, community, etc.). It keeps ongoing, but it all starts from the inside.
A lot of us are trying to rely on external methods to maintain our internal status. Think about light bulbs. They do not illuminate based on what’s around them. They are designed to produce light from within. Light bulbs are made to hold power and so are you.
God will use the light from your life to change the world. It’s your light that gives people hope.
Yet some of us are so busy watching other people shine on social media or watching other people live out their purpose that we forgot we have a candle. We know what everybody else is doing, who they’re dating, how much money they’re making, and our candle is in the back of a trunk somewhere LOL.
For others, they are so busy lighting everybody else’s candle (meaning they’re overworked saying yes to everything) that when they get home, they’re in the dark. They’re empty on the inside, but they keep giving and doing because they don’t want anyone to know it.
God wants to deal with us on the inside. He says, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers” (3 John 1:2). This includes our mind, will, emotions, intellect, imagination, and decision making. When we do what God tells us to do, we can’t make a bad decision because God always causes us to triumph in Christ Jesus. So if He told you to do it, you have the outcome of victory! Isn’t that amazing?
So I want you to ask yourself: Is your light on? Is it off? Or is it dim?
- When you are truly living for God, you are serving your purpose.
- Lack of submission to God will cause you to miss out on all the benefits of having a relationship with Him (confidence, purpose, power, freedom, prosperity, etc.)
- Our purpose on Earth is to draw people to Christ.
- Don’t get so distracted with what God is doing in the lives of others that you neglect to see what He wants to do in yours.
