How to Overcome Burn-Out in your Business
Are you overwhelmed and stressed out trying to get everything accomplished in your life and business? Do you struggle with self-care on your entrepreneurial journey? Self-mastery doesn’t happen on accident and it’s the key to mastering or managing everything in your life well.
There are so many things that need to get done in the day. If you’re an entrepreneur, I’m sure that your self-care was on the struggle bus for at least one season of your life. Or maybe you are riding that bus right now. Either way, I’m going to share something with you in this blog post that could change your life.
Listen. Each and every day we are all out here trying to give this thing called life our best. God tells us in His word that He has already promised us the victory (2 Corinthians 2:14) so why are so many people living life beneath His best? I think a lot of the time we have an idea of what we need to do in order to have what we say we want but we lack the know-how, or the discipline and energy to get it!
Maybe you’ve been doing everything you know to do, but you still can’t seem to keep your head above water. Or maybe you’ve secretly envied those friends of yours that always seems to beastmode their schedule with pep in their step and a smile. Maybe you’re in a season of transition (marriage, kids, job) and now you feel lost in the shuffle. Or maybe you’re getting what you want, but you’re unhappy and exhausted.
Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum, it’s easy to feel like it’s impossible to have it all together and still live your best life. (Not sure how to do this? I have 7 secrets for you here).
What they don’t tell you in Life 101 is that self-mastery doesn’t happen on accident and it’s the key to mastering or managing everything else well. If you want to succeed in your life or business, you must become intentional about the way you operate on a daily basis.
One of the principles God has emphasized over the last 3-4 years after He drastically interrupted my life and put me on the non-traditional path of being a speaker, entrepreneur, breakthrough strategist (all the hats except the Sombrero lol) was discovering my non-negotiables. And if you’re going to survive out here in the wild adventures of faith, I suggest you discover some too.
WHAT is a Non-Negotiable?
You may be thinking what are non-negotiables? Simply put, they are 5 actions you do daily in order to show up as the best version of yourself (with energy) so that you can maximize every single day. A lot of times people mistake this concept with time-management. They ask themselves, “What are the 5 things I need to do in order to get everything done?” but that’s not what I’m talking about.
Here is an example set of 5 non-negotiables:
- Work Out.
- Spend 2 hours of uninterrupted quality time with my spouse.
- Drink a gallon of water.
- Review my business goals.
What’s important is that you make your non-negotiables clear, single, and specific. They need to be actions that you’re willing to do every single day. Each non-negotiable shouldn’t be a long list of actions items in one like: 1. Pray, read my Bible, worship, do a downward dog and make my green smoothie 2. Work out, take a shower, and create tomorrow’s workout plan.
NO! It needs to be one action and you need to have 5 of them. Commit to them Monday through Friday and take the weekends to rest.
How to Choose YOUR Non-Negotiables
These action items may not automatically pop up in your head. You will probably have to slow down and really think about them. Ask yourself, “What helps me operate with excellence every day?” Your non-negotiables should help you become more intentional about your well being so you don’t faint out here in these entrepreneurial streets. They will eventually become your new healthy habits. You know the saying, “Your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, and your habits determine your life.”
Your non-negotiables are your pillars and your glue. They help you regulate your emotional health and they are the key to operating at your peak performance. So when you find yourself off track and overwhelmed because of the issues of life or all the many things on your to-do list, go back to your five non-negotiables!

Helpful Hint: Your 5 non-negotiables can change in different seasons of your life. For example, when I was writing my book Break Free, one of my non-negotiables was to write everyday. When the book was finished, I replaced that non-negotiable with something else.
How to Stick to your Non-Negotiables
Your 5 non negotiables are like your secret sauce. I suggest sharing them with your spouse or a close friend in order to help you stay accountable, but you don’t necessarily have to shout them from the mountain top. This is like the oil to your engine to keep you mindful and to keep you focused on what is most important throughout the day – which is showing up well.
God prospers us through our gifts and we use them to serve others. But how many people can you help if your tired, have no energy, or if you’re feeling down and discouraged? Showing up this way will only cripple your capacity and limit your ability to accomplish your goals.
You can’t run on empty and you can’t give what you don’t have. A huge part of being filled up daily is your private time with God (reading your bible, prayer, worship etc.) but after that, I would make sure you hit your other non-negotiables.
